American White Pelican - Everglades National Park

This morning I was joined by photographer Mike Turco for a trip out into Snake Bight to photograph American White Pelicans, search for the elusive Greater Flamingos, and see what else we could find. No luck on the Flamingos but had a phenomenal morning working with the pelicans. I always have trouble finding pleasing compositions with multiple birds but every once in a while I was able to isolate one or two pelicans. I really like the front bird in this image but the rear bird distracts for me. I imagine I will be returning in the upcoming weeks to focus more on the shorebirds and skimmers as well as try and get some more images of these pelicans. The afternoon was spent removing mud from everything I own and then resting. Wading through knee to thigh deep mud is extremly tiring especially when it is a two or three mile canoe trip to get there and back.

Interesting Sightings

I wasn't paying very close attention to the shorebirds at Snake Bight, but did see a couple American Avocets and a large number of Marbled Godwits, one of my favorites.

Other Interesting Observations:

While photographing the pelicans, an adult Bald Eagle flew by several times sending the shorebirds and Black Skimmers into the air. It is always a beautiful spectacle to see thousands of birds take to the air.
