American Alligator - Fakahatchee State Preserve

Today I drove over 350 miles while exploring the Big Cypress Swamp in the Fakahatchee State Preserve and Big Cypress National Preserve. I explored both of these parks from the road and took a few short side hikes. I found some nice birds and finally put my semester list over 110 species. On the way home I drove Loop Road looking for a panther, but the most exciting thing I found was a gator crossing the road. It was a very enjoyable day but a bit of a long one as I was gone 17 hours.

Interesting Sightings

I was surprised to find Eastern Bluebirds in Big Cypress Preserve as well as a nice flock of mixed warblers. The award for cutest animal of the day goes to a mother and baby raccoon at Fakahatchee but neither would hang around for a photograph.

Other Interesting Observations:

Both Fakahatchee and Big Cypress preserve north of US-41 were very dry. Water was scarce, especially throughout Fakahatchee. I will be returning sometime next week to take some images during the dry season so I can make comparisons once the rains return this summer.
