Everglades Communities
The Everglades region is more than simply a "river of grass." Subtle changes result in numerous communities such as the tree islands that dot the sawgrass and wet prairies, hardwood hammocks that are at the center of some of these tree islands, the mangrove forests that line the coastal regions, and even areas of open water such as the freshwater canals, ponds, and sloughs as well as the saltwater bays and tidal rivers. Each of the nine categories of communities are discussed here.
