This image is of the shell of a Florida Apple Snail, one of the most well known snails in the state. This snail is the main food source for both the Snail Kite and Limpkin, two birds found in the area. These are rather large aquatic snails, sometimes reaching a diameter of two inches. They are found in freshwater marshes where their presence is easily recognized by the masses of pink eggs that are laid on the side of plant stems. They are found throughout the state but I believe that they are being replaced in some areas by an exotic from Asia.
