Burrowing Owl - Marco Island, Florida

There is a nice population of Burrowing Owls on Marco Island. They are easily found by driving around the neighborhoods looking for empty lots with sections that are roped off. Someone has installed perches for these owls and done a nice job of trying to protect them from disturbance and development. Becuase the owls are living in neighborhoods with lots of people they are very tolerant of photographers and allow us to get fairly close without disturbing the birds. I have only seen Burrowing Owls a handful of times and was very pleased to be able to photograph them here. In this image I really like the fluffed up head and the talon that is lifted off the ground.
