Black-crowned Night Heron - Loop Road, Big Cypress National Preserve

Today, I had the opportunity to show a birder from Belgium the Everglades from Miami west across the Tamiami Trail all the way to Big Cypress and Fakahatchee Strand. We found a number of birds including this Black-crowned Night Heron. I approached this heron until I was too close to focus my lens. This image is full frame and I love the red eye in contrast with the bluish gray and white of the feathers.

Interesting Sightings

We found a Yellow-billed Cuckoo along Loop Road. This was only the second time I have ever seen one of these birds and this one was particularly close.

Other Interesting Observations:

Along the Tamiami Trail we stumbled across two adult Bald Eagles sitting in a dead cypress tree. As we were watching them, a juvenile (probably a 2nd or 3rd year bird) joined them. After a moment it flew off and one of the adults followed. It was nice to see three eagles all sitting together.
